An archaeologist wishes to make a marriage settlement on his grand-daughter, to save taxes. Since she is already married, he convinces her and her apparently doting husband to separate and later remarry, as a reward for which she will inherit a stately home in magnificent grounds.

Richard Ciddle suspects his wife Clara of having an affair (as he himself is); when she admits it, he offers a divorce on the condition that he first meets her lover. Since she is not in fact having an affair, she invents one by kissing a stranger at London Airport, believing him to be about to fly out and therefore eligible for a mild deception. Not only is the man not leaving, he is subsequently hit by Richard's car, and the plan begins to unravel.

Marshall Arnitt, a racing-car driver, is spending the weekend with his mother in the south of England, when his foster brother takes out his car and hits a cyclist on the Scottish border. Marshall agrees to take the blame for the accident, and James finds that their mother has been murdered, and Marshall has engineered the situation to make James look guilty.

'Mystery drama by Australian author Raymond Bowers. John Clostin returns to England after a six months sojourn in Australia to find that his wife wants to divroce him. He has other ideas, for during his absence his wife has inherited a substantial sum of money.'

James Talbot, separated from his wife, has set himself up in a West End flat, and installed his mistress next door, until he is told that she has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom.

'James Arnitt hits a cyclist while driving his foster-brither's car, and his foster-brother agrees to take the blame. There is a sinister motive behind the foster-brother's generosity and James is placed in a tight spot.'

He married for money, calculatingly, and for all his casual airs there is something calculating about everything he does. From the very beginning of tonight's play Clostin is planning something. For much of the time he is improvising, feeling his way, trying cleverly to find out what his wife Anne has in mind, where Peebles fits in, what Hurst has learnt from the others. And if this shrouds the play in mystery that is as it should be, for it is a play of detection, a subtle account of a battle of wits.'
