She'll Be Right : Writing the Wrongs Within the Australian Literary Landscape, Megan Fitzgerald , single work essay
'From the crusty surface of Australia's land, a space characterised by hard labour and masculine pursuits, the female sex has been condemned to the outskirts, hidden underground and reduced to red dust. Categorised as the 'other' within traditional masculine narratives, women were designated to be nothing more than 'bit-players on the stage of men's dramas, domestics, vapid ladies, waitresses, and mothers'.' Australia was conceived as a country of male conquest: a land to colonise, to dig for gold, to fight for, to build a home in. The resulting masculine physicality irrigated Australia's soil, seeding a cultural landscape where the female story was overshadowed, and her words remained largely unpublished.' (Introduction)
