Born in Iran to student activists, Dastyari arrived in Australia aged four. He has worked with Hawker Britton and served as General Secretary of New South Wales Labor. Appointed to the Senate in 2013, he was promoted to the shadow outer ministry in 2016, becoming manager of opposition business in the Senate and spokesperson for consumer affairs. He formally resigned from the Senate is January 2018, and later took up a role as Associate Director at Essential Media, in Annandale. He is based in Sydney.
